Team of the T20 Cricket World Cup … so far: Kohli, Curran, de Kock, Kiwis dominate Aussie-free zone

The T20 World Cup has brought the game’s biggest stars to Australia and some are shining while others are fading faster than a Mark Wood thunderbolt.

Now that every team has played at least once in the Super 12 stage, it’s time to kick off the nominations for Team of the World Cup.

As it stands, these 11 players have stood head and shoulders above the rest to give their team a flying start in the race to make the semi-finals. 

We will update the Team of the World Cup as the matches roll on towards the pointy end of the tournament which culminates with the final at the MCG on November 13.

Team of the World Cup

Openers

Finn Allen (42 runs off 16 balls) & Devin Conway (92 off 58) blasted Australia to smithereens at the SCG on Saturday night. Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendi smacked the Irish around for 68 off 43.
Verdict: Allen & Conway

Middle order

Indian superstar Virat Kohli is a no-brainer at first drop after his magnificent 82 off 53 to break Pakistan’s hearts at the MCG.  Pakistani duo Shan Masood (52 not out off 42) and Iftikhar Ahmed (51 off 34) got their Super 12 campaigns off to a strong start as did English power hitter Liam Livingstone (29 off 21), but Dutch all-rounder Colin Ackerman swamped them with a fine 62 off 48 to nearly get his team over the line against Bangladesh.
Verdict: Kohli, Ackerman & Iftikhar.

All-rounder

Hardik Pandya not only gave Kohli a willing ally with the bat with his 40 off 37 but also bowled superbly to take 3-30. Ben Stokes claimed a couple of wickets but failed with the bat for England.
Verdict: Pandya

Wicketkeeper

Quinton de Kock tarnished his keeping effort against Zimbabwe when he conceded five penalty runs for a fumble into a glove he’d left on the turf while preparing for a run-out throw but he more than made up for it with his batting fireworks.

He went ballistic with an unbeaten 47 from 18 deliveries before the rain proved the only way to stop him.

Spinner

Waninda Hasaranga bamboozled the Irish with 2-25 but unheralded Kiwi tweaker Mitch Santner is the clubhouse leader with his 3-31 running through the Australian top order.

Fast bowlers

English left-armer Sam Curran has been the standout with his 5-19 against Afghanistan in Perth, while Kiwi veterans Tim Southee (3-6) and Trent Boult (2-24), Indian left-armer Asrshdeep Singh (3-32) stepped up in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah and Proteas speedster Lungi Ngidi, who took 2-20 in slippery conditions at Hobart, have also been threatening.
