Khawaja denied double century as Aussies declare at 4-475

Australia have declared at 4-475 after a day-and-a-half of rain finally cleared with play against South Africa set to resume at the SCG midway through day four, leaving Usman Khawaja on 1965 – just five runs shy of a double century.

After 57 overs of the third Test were lost on the opening two days and Friday was completely washed out, rain lingered around Sydney for the majority of Saturday morning.

The showers finally stopped around 11.45am, before work was required at the edge of the pitch square with two chunks of turf replaced.

Umpires cleared the way for the match to resume at 1.45pm.

Sunny skies were also predicted for the final day on Sunday, but the earlier poor weather has meant the chances of a result have shrunk.

Australia’s decision to declare left Usman Khawaja stranded on 195no, five runs shy of his maiden Test double-century.

The hosts’ best chance of victory will be to secure a 200-run first-innings lead, enforce the follow-on and bowl South Africa out again to win the match.

While a draw remains the most likely prospect, South Africa have not hit a score of beyond 275 – or survived 100 overs – in their past eight innings.
