Warner gone: Renshaw gets the nod as struggling opener ruled out with concussion

David Warner has been ruled out for the remainder of the second test match against India, with the Australian opener succumbing to a concussion he sustained during the first day’s play.

Matthew Renshaw will get another chance in the top side after originally being dropped for this match.

Warner was struck in the head as well as the arm from separate balls during his innings, carrying on until he was dismissed for just 15. He did not return to the field when it was Australia’s turn to bowl after getting all out for 263.

Warner has been under recent pressure to be dropped from the Test side, but teammate Usman Khawaja believes it is too early to make that kind of call.

Khawaja said it was premature to bring down the curtain on Warner’s career.

“Three innings is not enough for me – I think there’s still a long way to go in this Test series,” Khawaja said.

“Dave has been such a terrific player for such a long time. Every time his back is against the wall he produces something so we’ll see.”

It was another ruthless performance from India, both with the ball and in the field, which prevented the visitors from breaking away at any stage, and ensured for the second match in a row they would be batting before stumps on Day 1 having lost the toss.

Day 2 will resume with India at the crease, sitting at 0-21.
