The road to the Ashes: Reflecting on an unforgettable 2019 series

The 2019 Ashes series proved triumphant for Australia, despite the eventual 2-2 scoreline.

The result meant Australia retained the Ashes on English soil for the first time in nearly two decades, having lost four consecutive series in the motherland prior to that.

As we draw closer to the highly anticipated 2023 Ashes campaign which kicks off in a fortnight, we reflect on some remarkable Betfair Exchange activity from the last time the sides met in England.

The drawn 2019 series was also the first between the two nations to finish level since the 1972 series, which was famous for Bob Massie’s 16-wicket Test match haul for the Aussies.

The draw did not trade as favourite until halfway through day four of the final Test!

Steve Smith was the batting star for Australia, amassing 774 runs at 107.6 despite missing an entire test match and half of another with concussion.

Ben Stokes heroics at Headingley in the third Test was a significant feature, and that match threw up several amazing numbers on the Betfair Exchange.

That Headingley Test will go down in history as one of the greatest matches of all time.

From a humiliating low to an exhilarating high, England would storm back into the series on the back of some Ben Stokes heroics.

The visitors would fall to 179 all out in the first innings as they hit $4.80 at the close.

England’s response was diabolical as they were demolished for just 67 – their lowest Ashes score in nearly a century.

Marnus Labuschagne’s 80 guided the Aussies to 246, meaning England needed 359 to square the series.

They would be in trouble at 2/15, and effectively gone at 9/286, still 73 runs from victory.

England would hit a maximum in play price of $36 on that final day, with Australia as low as $1.03.

With shades of Ian Botham’s magic from 1981, swashbuckling all-rounder Ben Stokes would blast them home in a drama filled finale, amassing 135*, and scoring all bar one of the runs in the 73-run final wicket stand.

England’s 67 in the first innings was the lowest score ever recorded by them as a nation in a test match they would still go on to win.

Nearly $2 million was taken on Australia to win the test throughout, and nearly 1.2 million on England, with the majority coming on that frantic final day.

Can Australia go one better and win the series in 2023? Or will England and their exciting “Baz-Ball” re-assert home team dominance, given the hosts have won 9 of the last 11 series across both countries?
