Cooper Connolly has enhanced his reputation as a player who comes through in the clutch with a match-saving 70 against South Australia.
Western Australia were in a tricky spot at Adelaide Oval when Connolly came to the crease with three wickets down and an overall lead of just 30 runs after being bundled out for 188 in the rain-marred Sheffield Shield day-nighter.
Connolly stuck around for 135 deliveries, finding the boundary 11 times, before he was eventually out to Henry Thornton with the match heading for a draw.
He combined with Hilton Cartwright for a 90-run stand and put on 111 with Aaron Hardie (39) as WA hung on to deny South Australia a shot at outright victory.
Thornton toiled hard for 3-77 from his 28 overs but SA missed the services of Test quick Brendan Doggett.
WA remain in last spot on the ladder with just one win from the first five rounds while SA are fourth.
Former Test opener Phil Jaques tore into NSW after they lost by an innings and 58 runs to Tasmania at Cricket Central in Sydney.
After the Blues made 9-391 before declaring, Tassie responded with 8-623 with Nikhil Chaudhary (163), Tim Ward (119) and Caleb Jewell (102) tonning up.
The Blues were bowled out for 174 on the final day with Sam Konstas continuing his form slump, out for 19 to follow up his 43 in the first innings.
“The second innings there’s been no fight, no plan and no effort,” Jaques said in commentary.
“That might sound harsh, but there’s got to be some application.
“There’s got to be some fight. It fell away badly in the field too.”
Kurtis Patterson (one), Oliver Davies (two) and Josh Philippe (seven) all went cheaply before the Blues tail folded with only Lachlan Shaw (44), captain Jack Edwards (38) and opener Ryan Hicks (37) putting up any decent resistance.
Evergreen seamer Jackson Bird (3-36) and fellow quicks Gabe Bell (3-30) and Riley Meredith (2-34) were the destroyers for Tasmania, who are up to third on the ladder with NSW languishing in fifth after three losses in five starts.
