England cricket chief Rob Key has cleared the Ashes squad of any wrongdoing following claims they treated a mid-tour break at Noose like a stag do with excessive drinking at the popular holiday spot.
Vision also emerged of opening batter Ben Duckett slurring and struggling to find his way back to the team’s hotel after the second Test loss at the Gabba with a bystander joking that he needed an “Uber to the nets” after struggling in the first couple of matches in the series.
Key had told the media “if they’re drinking lots and it’s a stag-do, all that type of stuff, that’s completely unacceptable” when reports first emerged of long drinking sessions at the Sunshine Coast stopover.
He spoke to security personnel who accompanied the team to Noosa and team management and found “nothing more damning than beer drinking”, according to a Daily Mail report.
Former Australia coach Darren Lehmann had stuck up for the England players after the reports emerged to say that when he visited them at Noosa, they had been on their best behaviour.
No formal action will be taken by the ECB against the players for their actions on the Sunshine Coast before or after the Brisbane match.
England ended an 18-match winless streak in Australia when they beat the home side by four wickets in the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last Saturday.
They are hoping to build on that momentum and reduce the final margin to 3-2 by upsetting the Aussies at the SCG in the series finale, which gets under way on Sunday.
