Australias worst nightmare as Lyon limps off with calf injury

Nathan Lyon has limped from the field with an apparent calf injury, as England fought their way back into the second Ashes Test at Lord’s.

Lyon pulled up sore after running in attempting to catch Ben Duckett off Cameron Green at deep backward square, before the ball well fell short of the spinner.

Lyon’s injury comes after he took Australia’s one wicket before tea on day two, with England 1-145 at the break in response to Australia’s 416.

The offspinner had entered this match as the first bowler in history to play 100 straight Tests, in a testament to his fitness and form.

But this injury now looms as crucial for Australia, in a similar vein to when Glenn McGrath trod on a ball at Edgbaston in 2005.

The tourists do not have another frontline spinner in their team with Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith the other options.

Todd Murphy is in the squad if Lyon is ruled out of any Tests, but Australia have not had to play without the veteran tweaker since 2013.

Lyon’s injury came amid a good start to the second day for England, who were able to take Australia’s last five wickets for 77 runs on Thursday before making a safe start to their innings.

Aside from Lyon’s effort to have Zak Crawley stumped on 48, England have managed to put the pressure back on Australia with Ben Duckett 62 not out at tea and Ollie Pope 32.
